Differentiation/Accommodations Relating to Contextual Factors

After collecting the data that was presented prior, I created a variety of techniques and strategies to assist the class based on their individual needs. In this classroom, there are several students who I consider to be talented/high students. Since none of them have been officially identified by the Gifted and Talented Education program (GATE), I will refer to them as talented. Most of the talented students thrive on projects and tasks that challenge them. One talented student doesnt enjoy too much challenge and expects everything to come easily to her. Recently she needed to actually study for a test and had a small panicked moment. With her, Ive found that higher order questions are most appropriate and she stretches her understanding through them. Sheltered Instructional Observation Protocol (SIOP) is very effective with these students, especially the ELL students. The SIOP features hands on materials, and making the content meaningful seem to be most effective for the classroom personality. There are many students that are kinesthetic. The ELL students in the class respond very well to activities that are meaningful over assignments that are worksheet based. Another effective strategy for this classroom is relating to background knowledge and past learning. If that part of the lesson is short, the students get confused more easily than if I spend time to activate their past experiences both in and out of school. For my students that struggle with behavior I have a few strategies that are beneficial for them. Though there are three behavior students, they require different methods as well as general methods to keep them from getting distracted and disrupting the class. Involving them with

teacher tasks, such as pulling sticks, handing out materials, etc, helps them meet their needs of feeling important and staying engaged. Opportunities for interaction are also very helpful for this group. They like to speak and dont typically stray off topic easily. Another helpful strategy is by assigning them to be group leader or involving them in hands on activities.
