At the entry-level, students will discuss with each other and with the class on the topic of why there are so many different types of things around us, when theyre all mostly made up of similar elements. This discussion will be visited periodically as the students knowledge of matter and atoms increases. For Formative Assessment, students will engage in a number of worksheets and activities. A worksheet outlining the states in matter and the processes in which they change into one another will be given to the students to work on in groups. Students will create flashcards in class on the common elements, containing the name of the element on one side and periodic information on the other. An online quiz will be available for students to practice their elements in preparation for the in-class quiz. Students will have a worksheet to complete in class covering subatomic particles and the structure of atoms. Students will have an activity in which they are given their own periodic table to color in and fill out to show periodic trends and groups. This will be updated throughout the year as more information on the chart becomes available. Finally, a quiz will be given in class based on periodic elements, groups, and trends. For the Summative Assessment, students will be assigned a project in which they must research an assigned element on the periodic table. This can be done individually, or in groups of two. The information required for the project can be found in the unit lecture. Finally, an exam on the unit will be given to the students, covering information on states of matter, subatomic particles, and periodic trends.
