MACBETH The Journals

The following journals are to be completed at the end of each Act. Choose ONE journal prompt per Act (you will have 5 total). Follow the reader response format (2 columns, bibliographical reference, suggested prompts). At the end of the unit, you will choose one for marking but must submit all 5. ACT I 1. Describe the Elizabethan perception of witches and the influence on mankind seen in Macbeth . /OR 2. Explain the roles of the power of suggestion and the power of prophecy as seen in Macbeth as well as in contemporary society. ACT II 1. Describe the role of Lady Macbeth in ACT II. Do her actions reflect the roles of women in the 11th century Scotland? Explain. /OR 2. Provide your opinion on Macbeths character so far. Do you feel his hallucinations represent his deep rooted guilt over his actions? Or, do the hallucinations represent a truly flawed character? ACT III 1. Identify 3 internal/mental battles that characters are waging. Include participants and describe what is happening to them. /OR 2. Politically, decide if Macbeths plan of action at the end of ACT III is valid. Was this necessary or were there other options open to him? Explain. ACT IV 1. Explain the power (if any) the witches hold over Macbeth at the end of the act. /OR 2. Macbeths reputation as the Scottish King has changed. What is his new reputation, how is it different and what caused the change? Each journal entry MUST be 2 written paragraphs. MUST include specific reference to the text (include Act, Scene, line reference ie. II, IV, 10-12)

ACT V 1. Using Macbeth as an example, define the term nobility as seen by the Elizabethan audience, as well as the 11th century Scottish nobles. /OR 2. Flawed character or tragic hero? Which would you use to describe Macbeth? Explain.
