National Identity: National identity according to Anthony D. Smith is founded in culture, in contradistinction to the concept of nationalism, which is a political movement. National identity involves both cultural ideas (such as ideas on common ancestry or history), and cultural symbols, (such as monuments, poetry, architecture). Despite popular belief that National identity and Democracy go hand in hand, Smith argues that the real basis of national identity lies within an ethnic community.
