Even before Anne had finished her visit, an email came in saying that her next appointment was asking that she come as soon as possible. When Anne got to the next members door, she quickly discovered why. The womans roommate was stuck. Earlier that day, the roommate had fallen, gone to the ER, found that she fractured her right upper arm and came home with a sling. In the meantime, she went to use the bathroom, sat there too long and was unable to get off the toilet, despite assistance from the member and a nephew. The woman was reluctant to call 911 for a second time in the same day. The first order of business was to stabilize the fractured arm, which by now had shifted half way out of the sling, Anne said. Next, figure a way to get her out of the bathroom. Anne devised a method of using a sheet as a transfer belt. It took three tries, but member, nephew and I finally got her out of there, Anne said. We transferred her to a mechanical rising recliner and I then spent the next 20 minutes encouraging her to keep her legs elevated to prevent swelling, do exercises on the legs to prevent clots and promote strength as well as deep-breathing exercises to avoid pneumonia. Then, I began the assessment on the member, Anne said. But, as it turns out, the members roommate was also a member of the same health plan. Both women were very appreciative of the help and felt it was lucky I came that day, Anne said.
