Nathallie Chavez Lynn Raymond February 9, 2014 WP #4 The Lost Colony

One of Americas oldest mysteries took place in the summer of 1587. A group of 115 English settlers made it to Roanoke Island, John White, the governor of the colony went back to their mother country for fresh supplies. Upon his arrival England broke out into war with Spain, and Queen Elizabeth I ordered every ship for the war. John White was stuck in England. He was unable to get out of England until 1950. He had left his wife, daughter, and granddaughter, who was the first English child born in the Americas. When John White came back to Roanoke 3 years later, he found nothing, no sign of life, and no proof that there had ever been life there. It was completely isolated, with the exception of one word carve into a tree, coatoan. Croatoan was the name of a neighboring town that was home to Native Americans. A hurricane forced John White to return to England, not giving him any chance to look for clues. If I could go back and investigate an event, it would be this one, John Whites lost colony. Perhaps, they waited for him and lost hope and tried to return to England by their own means, and were lost at sea. Maybe, they were abducted by Native Americans, and the killed. The possibility that they united with the Native Americans and moved to a different area isnt eliminated either. I would solve this mystery because Im curious as to what could have happen to them. Had they never disappeared, they would have met the pilgrims that landed there 30 year later.
