! Re: Matthew Stern! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

As his McGill University student teacher eld supervisor, I would like to share my impressions of Matthew Stern, made during his rst student teaching eld experience, November 25 - December 12, 2013. ! Matthew's enthusiasm, energy, and engagement with students was apparent from day one. He was quick to learn students' names and to greet them outside of class on a regular basis. ! In his own words, Matthew was "fully engaged, respectful, professional, committed, and, inspired". And, I concur.! During this "stage", the student teacher is to be exposed to the whole school and experience the many different aspects of the educational process. For the students of all levels, Matthew was approachable, and, they felt at ease in his presence.! Elementary school teaching has become very much a female dominated profession. Thus, Matthew has shown that he is a risk-taker, as probably fewer than ten per cent of elementary student teaching candidates are male. And, research has shown that male role models in the elementary environment enhance the development of all children.! Matthew likes to think "outside the box". He is interested in alternative forms of education and explores best practises both within, and, outside of the system.! The bottom line evaluation of a student teacher seems to be found in the questions, "Would you want this person as a colleague?", and, "Would you want this person teaching your children?" In Matthew's case, my answer would be a resounding, "Yes."!

! Respectfully submitted,! !
