The Birth-Mark Baldessarini, Ross, Quinn, James. The Birth-Mark: A Deathmark.Hartford Studies in Literature 13.2 (1981): 91-98.Literary Resources of Gale.Web.27 Mar.2014. The authors of the article say that Hawthorne writes about many people that have obsession-compulsive disorders, but that Aylmer is one of the worst. In the article we are told that Aylmer has a mental disorder that is clearly stated as obsession-compulsive disorder. Aylmer never has the disorder while trying to get his wife to marry him, but apparently after they are wed he starts to develop this obsession over the birth mark that she has on her cheek. The birth mark is not that large and it can be covered with about two fingers. Hawthorne describes it as a hand-shaped mark. They also have found that Hawthorne wrote Aylmer is a man that is neurotic and that his neurotic symptoms go perfectly with his obsessive compulsive ones. Since Aylmer has neurotic compulsions, they found in their research that people with that disorder worry more about little things so that they can be substituted for something more important. This source can help me plenty in what I have decided to write about which is about the psychoanalytic aspects that the story has brought to the world. So when I start to write the paper this source will give me many important quotes and facts that inform the people about the side of

McCauley 2 Aylmer and his obsessive-compulsive neurotic disorder. This source that I have looked up is credible in the research that I am conducting. Hawthorne, Nathaniel. The Birth-Mark. The Norton introduction to Literature. JonesRichardson, Spencer. New York. Mays, Kelly.2012. 290-301.Print The story The Birth-Mark is about a man that becomes obsessed with the birth mark that his wife has on her face to the point that he compares it to the size of a hand. Aylmer, the husband, is also a scientist who then plans to remove the mark on his wifes face and after so many insults, she finally agrees to remove it because she knows how much her husband hates it. Once she agrees he does many procedures so that she can get it removed, then ends up dying at the end. This source compares to my other sources by being the most important due to the fact that it is the actual story and it shows Aylmer and the way he was and why his poor wife died. This source will help me plenty while writing this paper because it will be the base of all Aylmers obsession towards the blemish that his wife had on her face. Howard, Jeffery. Nathaniel Hawthornes The Birth-Mark. The Explicator 70 (2012).Literary Resources. Web. 27 Mar.2014 This article is talking about the allegory in the story and how everything became a chemical reaction to the next. It also says something about why Georgina decided to let Aylmer go through with the producers. It says she did it to make him happy despite the way she felt because she loved him.

McCauley 3 This story will be of good use because it explains many things such as how the birth mark is a symbol by being on Georginas face. It will be of good use to me when I write because I am thinking about writing about the allegory in the story and why the birth mark is there also on how it became the center of attention for Aylmer. Rosenberg, Liz. The Best That Earth Could Offer. The Birth-Mark, A Newlyweds Story. Studies in Short Fiction 30: 145 Academic Search Complete. Web. 27 Mar 2014 This article explains what they believe is wrong with Aylmer and also talks about how he couldnt just forget about the birthmark and live happy, but ends up killing his wife the ultimate divorce. They also about discuss how his assistant is an alter-ego to Aylmer and how his heart sees the truth of whats going on and that Georgina is actually beautiful. This article will help me because it gives many points that I can mix in with the whole obsession-compulsive disorder that I have decided to talk about. This article is credible because I got it in the schools database. Youra, Steven. The Fatal Hand: A Sign of Confusion in Hawthornes The Birth-Mark American Transcendental Quarterly 60 (June 1986):43-51.Literary Resources of Gale.Web.27 Mar.2014 The author of this article talks about the confusion that the story has in it and how Hawthorne makes Aylmer that way. The author talks about how through many of these instances it has been confirmed that Aylmer himself created the mark that he vowed to remove from his wifes face. In this article the author says that the birth mark has many symbols about it so that the reader can interpret it in the way that they would like and that it all depends on them.

McCauley 4 This source can be very helpful for me because it provides many attitudes towards the symbols that the story the Birth-Mark has. I am going to use this article and talk about how the symbols are important in the story and what they could be and also the reaction behind them. This source that I have looked up is very credible in the research that I am conducting.
