Changes in States of Matter In this unit, weve come to understand that matter can be found in a number of different states,

specifically solid, liquid, or gaseous. However, what processes allow matter to change back in forth between these states? Is it something that simply happens in nature, or it is something that has to be forced? The answer to these questions varies between elements and states, but can be a way to exactly identify an unknown element. For this assignment, students will take a closer look at a specific element and its different states. An element different than that of the previous presentation assignment will be assigned to each student to research its behaviors in each state. The required information for the assignment will include the following: Melting Point Boiling Point Properties of each state Common uses of each state Common forms of each state Which state is found in nature Pictures of your element in each state The information required will be placed on a flow chart like the one below, with each state occupying a circle of the chart. The boxes next to the arrows will be used to describe the changes of state, and the requirements for the change. The box at the top-right of the chart will be for your elements name. Information regarding each element can be found within your text, as well as in online resources, such as the pTable website included in the Useful Links. You will be graded on the accuracy of your research, along with the organization of your chart.
