Throughout this paper I will discuss leadership roles as they manifest themselves in a post apocalypse landscape. More specifically I will examine the evolution of the leadership with four characters from The Walking Dead AMC television series: The Governor, Rick Grimes, Merle Dixon, and Hershel Greene. Terms: transactional leadership model: in which the leader emerges as a result of transactions and exchanges with group members. transformational leadership model: in which the leader adapts to the changes and instability of the situation and involves, motivates, and supports followers in a manner consistent with the required transformations.
charismatic leadership: leaders charm, likeliness human-oriented leadership: leaders consideration task-oriented leadership: leaders initiating structure

The Governor: The Governor was the leader of two different groups which required two different tactics/leadership styles. The first group he was with his style was more easily going and cooperative. The members of that group were eager to do what he asked and was motivated by the protection and shelter he provided them with. Van Kleef, experiment said that leaders with a neutral emotion got the most productivity with members with a high agreeableness. It also stated that neutral emotion leaders are better fitted for a low stressful environment rather than a stressful environment. The type of member in The Governors first group had a high agreeableness. Also, with that group he had a discourse community of protectors/killers. Their

job was to do the dirty work for The Governor so they had to be handled a different way. His emotion towards them was anger and stern. He told them to go do stuff and made them feel like if they did not do as he told that they would be punished. In the second group The Governor started off as a transformational leader and turned into a transactional leader. As a transformational leader The Governor was part of a group and not a leader. He was looked up to by the leaders and respected by the other memebers of the group. He also used this tactic in the first group as well. He used different motivational tactics to motivate different groups of people. He played with the females in both groups emotions to get them to follow him, he gave people in the town a safe location so that they dont mind a curfew, and acted as if he knows it all and whats best for other people to get the soldiers to do his dirty work. By killing off the leaders in the second group he was then made into the leader of that group, transactional. Reinout came up
with three different styles of leadership; charismatic leadership, human-oriented leadership and, taskoriented leadership. The Governor was more of a charismatic and task-oriented leader. He never had that line of communication with all of his members and that is why they were not as committed to him as he thought. Matthew Baggetta, studies shows that the more time a leader spends with his group the more committed he will be to them. With The Governor this is easily proven because we see how he spent his time trying to find a cure for his daughter, who is a walker, and isolated himself in a room instead of being in the town and helping them. When Michonne killed his daughter he put everything into wanting her dead. As a result he lost his first and second group. Darin White study proves those The Governor protection/hit squads are just like him. They do not mind killing people, violence, or manipulating someone in order to get what they want. Merle wanted to find his baby Brother, Daryl. He played nice with blonde, Andrea just to get information about where he was last seen. In Pauleens model The Governor have Merle and Milton and uses them strategically. Milton get a lab and conduct experiment on

Rick Grimes: David Pauleen study talks about how leaders should assess the condition that the members are in, the relationship that they have with the subordinates, and plan accordingly to that. Rick has done a good job with that in every situation that they have encountered. While at the prison Rick found the weak spots and assigned people he knew he could trust to secure the location, and he had an emergency backup plan just in case something went wrong so that they could escape. In Darin Whites study he showed the relationship between the leader integrity and the subordinates ethics. Rick is a former sheriff so you would expect him to have a high integrity rating. Members in his group do not like anybody who has broken the law or they feel like would do anything not worthy of Rick. Rick ask all the new people before they can join the group, have they killed anybody?. If they say yes then he will not allow them in to the group because he does not want that kind of influence in his group. Merle Dixon: Hershel Greene:
