Wayland Baptist gets by OCU 5-4 in 10 innings

PLAINVIEW, Texas Gaby De La Cruz hit a two-run home run with two out in the bottom of the 10th inning to provide Wayland Baptist a 5-4 win over Oklahoma City University on Friday at Wilder Field. Mason Toole delivered a two-run homer to put the Stars ahead 4-2 in the top of the 10th. OCU, ranked 10th in NAIA baseball, moved to 29-15, 17-7 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The Stars' Josh Dickey socked an RBI single to tie the game 2-2 in the top of the eighth. Hunter Marcum scored OCU's first run in the sixth on a wild pitch after reaching on an error. Jared Baker broke up Tom Bailey's no-hit bid by nailing a base hit into right field leading off the eighth. Josh Halbert pinch ran for Baker, then scored on Dickey's single. With two out in the 10th, Toole homered to left field with Adam Clark on base. Toole pinch hit, while Clark ran for Forrest Smith, who drew a walk to start the inning. Michael Nolan pitched the first 6.2 innings for OCU. He had two strikeouts and allowed two runs on seven hits and four walks. Roby Romero hurled the final three innings for the Stars. Romero fanned six, but took the loss to move to 1-2. Bailey turned in a 123-pitch performance, striking out 13 in nine innings. Bailey allowed two hits. Corey Weldon finished for Wayland Baptist and picked up the win. The Stars face East Central at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Jim Wade Stadium.
