LaCASU TO HOST BLOOD DRIVE WITH GIVEAWAYS IN LSU UNION

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 27, 2014

! BATON ROUGE, La. The Louisiana Center Addressing Substance Use in Collegiate Communities (LaCASU) will host a blood drive for LSU students from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Louisiana State Universitys Student Union in the Vieux Carre room on April 7. Participants in the blood drive will be eligible to win a variety of giveaways provided by sponsors. The blood drive will raise awareness about LaCASU and the opportunities it offers to the LSU community. This event will also raise awareness for cirrhosis of the liver, which is a disease alcoholics may get and in turn many need blood transfusions. Allison Smith, a coordinator for LaCASU, will be in attendance at the blood drive and will answer questions that students have pertaining to alcohol and drug use. Students will have the opportunity to submit their email address to LaCASU during the blood drive in order to receive information about upcoming events for LaCASU. Participants in the blood drive will be entered into a raffle to win two 2014 Bayou Country Superfest tickets. In addition, blood drive participants will have the chance to win a gift card from Barnes and Noble, Gap Inc., Bath & Body Works, Starbucks, Superior Grill or Walk Ons Bistreaux and Bar. All winners will be selected following the blood drive. LaCASU is an outgrowth of Louisiana State Universitys participation in a 10university research project titled A Matter of Degree, (AMOD). AMOD required the 10 universities, all with high binge drinking rates, to initiate a campus-community coalition, which included better enforcement of alcohol laws, campus alcohol education and campus alcohol policy. LaCASU was founded as a result of the 1997 death of an LSU student. The students death was a result of excess alcohol consumption. LaCASU was created to promote healthy lifestyles among the collegiate community in order to avoid similar tragedies. The nonprofit organization provides many programs and research initiatives targeted to university students in order to foster safe and healthy collegiate communities.
