FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sindecuse Health Center Implements Check for Lumps, Save your Bumps Campaign KALAMAZOO, Mich., September 14, 2014- Sindecuse Health Center is implementing a month long campaign at Western Michigan University to raise awareness about the importance of breast self-exams for women.

Western Michigan University has a student population of 51.67% women, said Kris Hanson, director of nursing at Sindecuse Health Center. With a bit over half of our student body being women and statistics showing that 1 in 8 women will be affected by breast cancer, we feel it is our duty to educate the women of our campus on the importance of breast self-exams because it could ultimately save their lives.

The campaign will take place the entire month of October and consists of a 5k run/walk, a speaker series, flyer distribution, social media communication, and a new question regarding knowledge of performing a successful breast self-exam on the registration form at Sindecuse Health Center. - MORE -

We wanted to make sure that this campaign had multiple components to ensure at least one interest point for everyone, said Cari Robertson, director of health promotion and education at Sindecuse Health Center. We even have social media outlets and a website providing information on proper breast self-exams for the women of Westerns community who may not be able to attend our events or who are not on campus very often.

The Sindecuse Health Center is in need of student volunteers to help with the various events. For more information about the campaign or how to become a volunteer, contact Lynnette Abbate at
