With math and ELA been the most focused subjects across the nation, it is imperative that every

teacher is equipped with a substantial ELA inventory. In Mrs. Anthonys class she has an array of different material both issued by the district and her own personal collection. There are three areas that I focused on during this observation and interview. The Accelerated Reader program, PASS coach books, and Study Island. All of the materials provided in the classroom are designed to challenge, motivate, and support student achievement in ELA.

Accelerated Reader- The Accelerated Reader or AR program is designed to encourage students to ready more often; while attempting to increase reading comprehension and fluency. Each student is calculated their own AR score every month based on their reading level and PASS prediction scores. Reading is a given and understood homework assignment every night. Students are also allotted time to read during the school day as well; whether it be transitional time between lessons, or when students return from recess to wind them down. Due to the upcoming PASS tests, Mrs. Anthony has set a goal specifically for her students to read five AR books per week! She says that the students love this extra incentive because they are competing with the other 3rd grade class for a pizza party at the end of the year, they are indeed in first place!

PASS Coach Books- PASS stands for Palmetto Assessment of State Standards. Testing grades are 3rd-8th. The State has materials that are designed with the PASS tests in mind while enhancing student literacy achievement. In the provided materials are workbooks and worksheets, along with discussion guides for the teacher. These supplies are not utilized daily, but weekly, yes.

Study Island- Study Island is a computer-based software engrained with ELA content. Students are engaged with the technology. The program is designed to enhance to literary development experience through technology. Content based materials are intertwined within the games to foster student excitement. Mrs. Anthony allows students that are not quite up to proficiency log

into the program for more assistance, and students that are excelling use the tool as free time during reteaching portions of the day.
