HOMEWORK 7

Fall 2013

DUE DATE: Monday, December 2, in class. Problem 1. Let {en } be the standard unit vectors in l2 . Prove that w limn en = 0. Problem 2. Let xn c0 be the sequence whose rst n terms are 0 and all the other terms are 1 (notice that each xn is a sequence being an element of c0 ). Prove that {xn } does NOT converge in norm. However, prove that {xn } converges weakly and compute its weak limit. Problem 3. Let X be a Banach space. Let {xn } be a sequence in X with converges (in norm) to some element x, and let {fn } be a sequence in X that converges in the weak* sense to some element f . Prove that limn fn (xn ) = f (x). Hint: Use the last problem from the midterm (Banach-Steinhaus theorem) to prove that {fn } is a bounded set in X . Problem 4. Consider the functional f (l1 ) (a) Show that f is continuous (bounded). (b) Show that there exists a sequence {yk } l1 which converges in the weak* sense to y l1 such that f (yk ) doesnt converge to f (y ) (i.e. f is not weak* continuous). Problem 5. Let X be a Banach space and let {xn } be a sequence in X which converges weakly to some element x X . Prove that x lim inf n xn . Problem 6. Let T L(X, Y ). Prove the following: (a) ker(T ) = T (Y ) . (b) T (X ) = ker(T ) . Problem 7. Consider the space C [a, b] equipped with the usual . norm. Let k : [a, b] [a, b] R be a continuous function. Dene an operator T : C [a, b] C [a, b] by
b

l dened by f (x) =

n=1

xn for all x = {xn } l1 .

(T f )(x) :=
a

k (x, y )f (y )dy.

Prove that T is bounded and compute its norm (in terms of k (x, y )).

Problem 8. Consider the space C [0, 2 ] equipped with the usual . T : C [0, 2 ] C [0, 2 ] by
x

norm. Dene an operator

(T f )(x) :=
0

cos(y )f (y )dy.

Prove that T is bounded and compute its norm. Problem 9. Let c = {cn } l1 . Consider the operator T : l l1 dened by T ({xn }) := {cn xn }. Prove that T is bounded and compute its norm (in terms of c = {cn }).
