Physics 151/205 THR 2nd Sem 2013-14 Problem Set I Use pens and yellow pads.

Show complete solutions. Points are indicated in parentheses ie total is 50 points. Due date is Thursday next week 23Jan2014, during class hours. No late submissions to be accepted for problem sets! 1. (5) In a simplified model of gas particles, the system is divided into V cells of unit volume. Find the number of ways to distribute N distinguishable particles ( 0 ) within the V cells, such that each cell may be empty of filled-up with only one particle. How would the answer be in the case of indistinguishable particles? 2. (10) Consider a binomial distribution for a 1D random walk with N=6, p=2/3,q=1/3. a. Draw the graph of (1 ) vs. 1. b. Solve for 1 and 1 2 to obtain the corresponding Gaussian distribution (1 ). c. Draw the graph of (1 ) vs. 1 and compare with (a). d. Do (a), (b) and (c) for N=6 and N=36. 3. (5) How many accessible microstates does a system of two (2) localized and independent quantum oscillators with fundamental frequencies 0 and 30 respectively, and a total energy of = 10 have? Enumerate the microstates. 4. (10) a. The molecular density of interstellar gas clouds is about 104 molecules/mL. The temperature is approximately 10K. Calculate the pressure. Compare with vacuum obtainable in NIP research labs. b. The human ear can detect an energy intensity of about 2x10-12 W m-2. Consider a light source with output of 100W. At what distance is its intensity equal to 2x10-12 W m-2. 5. (10) Given entropy S(U,V,N) calculate =
| .

6. (10) According to Grahams Law of Diffusion, the rate of diffusion of gas molecules is inversely proportional to the square root of its mass. Explain why this is so using the kinetic theory of gases. How would you expect the diffusion coefficient to depend on temperature then?
