Comprehension strategy instruction: Teaching narrative text structure awareness. The Reading Teacher, 61(2), 161167. DOI:10.1598/RT.61.2.6 Main Idea Studies have shown that comprehension can be explicitly taught and improves reading but comprehension instruction remains non-existent or only barely taught. Instructing students in story grammars or rules of structure all students to understand narrative texts at earlier grades and at a deeper level Instruction ideas and their professional literature support are provided for narrative text structure awareness. Supporting Details Story grammar is rules or structure that a genre typically follows. The story grammars provide students a basic place to begin analyzing the parts of narrative stories. Analysis of the parts greatly improves comprehension and sets students up for more complex structures and analysis in later grades. Story grammar also allows students a guide for writing their own stories.

Reflection The most important part of this article for my future classroom is the practical instruction ideas it provides. I think the logic of the article makes sense and for it to be backed by studies I see no reason not to use some of the strategies. It really makes sense that by providing students with a framework within which to begin exploring narrative texts that they would then be better prepared for harder texts and for their own writing. It is like a scaffolding method just like decoding strategies.
