Halliday English 106 4/1/14 Beware the Jargon in Academic-Speak A great part of this paper is that the English language is ever changing. As we have been discussing in class lately and as our previous readings have stated, the English language is actually rather good at evolving. This paper speaks on the use of Jargon to exclude a meaning, and keep it obscure to the reader. Though it is not mentioned on the list of shame done by the Plain English Campaign, I agree with the author when he says that some of the Universities do use confusing phrases. The truth is, however, that all this confusion cannot really be stopped. As important of an issue as this is, the article is over reaching when is says that, Perhaps we should have a cull every year or two of jargon words that do not add real meaning. Unfortunately, this is not a possibility, but I believe that something needs to be done to stop the use of jargon as an exclusion technique. I found it interesting as well when the paper brought up the fact that the Catholic Church uses jargon to condense their message and actually

help get a point across more quickly. So by the end of the reading, I can see that jargon is something that can be used for good and for evil.
