52-81; 439-447; 453-456 To begin with these readings, there is a chapter about defying the stereotypes. This article does not have to do with jargon quite as the others have. This is more of an example of the discourse paper that we are expected to write. I believe that it is well written in that it analyzes each photo that is presented. This is different from what we are doing in class because this is not based on a paper, but rather it is based on photos and television. There is great thick description of each photo, going into detail not only on what the photo has in it, but what the photographer was implying in the creation of the image. The second part of the first reading examines the Gettysburg address by Abraham Lincoln. You will hear the word dedicate five times. The first two times refer to the nations dedication to two ideals mentioned in the Declaration of Independence, the original ideal of liberty and the ideal that became central to the civil War: that all men are created equal. I believe that this shows a good example of thick description, when the author speaks about listening to the address with new ears. The next section of the reading deals with finding reliable sources for information and finding a good site in which we can locate an article to write about. This reading gives good information related to class in that it tells you how to navigate the Purdue Library website. This also reminds me of a big part of finding an article is verifying the source. Remember, though, that you need to be careful about Evaluating sources that

you find on the web because the web is unregulated and no one independently verifies the information posted on its sites.
