Extended Inquiry Project Proposal

For my extended inquiry project, I have chosen to study a Sikh Sunday School in Charlotte, North Carolina. I have chosen this community because I want to know more about how the new generation Sikhs learn about their culture and tradition in a country that is different from their native land. I want to know how the environment feels when they are sitting in class. Does it feel like a normal primary school with nice classrooms or is it small with not as much resources? I am also interested in how everyone communicates within the class. Do they speak in English or do they speak in their native tongue (Punjabi)?
Comment [G2]: you could possibly talk about how this class differs from other types of classrooms. Comment [G1]: you could talk about the religion more and give a little background.

Being in a region far from their own, I think it would be interesting to see how they try to keep their culture alive within their community and see the progress by observing the students learning about their heritage. I already understand that they have their own language they speak in but I was curious to see if their language is influenced based off the region they are from. In America, you hear the difference between a southerner and a northerner. I wanted to see how they set their language curriculum so it's not biased towards any particular region. I also think being able to observe how engaged the students are in learning will be very important to understand this community. I get to see if they are interested in finding out where they come from and how their community is unique from other societies in this world. I basically want to see how this Sunday School is set up. I'm interested in knowing what kind of projects they do to help the students learn or if they have homework assigned to them every week. I want to see how well the teachers are organized with their lesson plans and see if this school is actually effective in helping the new generation Sikhs learn about themselves. Are the teachers certified or are they
Comment [G4]: these are good small questions to support your ethnography. Comment [G3]: The would be a good way on observing this group. It could possibly provide some rich information.

just volunteering to do what's best for the kids. I think my main overall question would be to find out what their goal is for this Sunday school and how they are trying reach that goal.
