A Good Man Is Hard to Find, is a short story set in Atlanta about a grandmothers objections with going to Florida because she would rather go to Tennessee to reconnect with friends. In her objections to her son, Bailey, she explains that a man by the name of the Misfit has escaped from a federal prison and is suspected to be on his way toward Florida, and how she could not bare it on her soul to go in the same direction as a criminal. Bailey ignores her, as well as the childrens mother while she is feeding their 8-month baby. The children, John Wesley and June Star, ridicule her. They all left at 8:45 the next morning, and low and behold the grandmother is the first person to be in the car, packed and ready to go, no one knows, she even got the cat with her, Pitty Sing, who is seated between John Wesley and June Star. In ordinary road trip fashion, the grandmother began to tell stories, and they eventually stopped at a truck stop called Red Sammys and got something to eat. While eating their lunch, the grandmother has a conversation with Red Sam, in which he discusses him begin robbed by two men and then the grandmother says that, A good man is hard to find, (5). They talk for a while and the family leaves. The grandmother then lies to the kids, and the kids go crazy about going to see this house with secret panels, and the father, Bailey gives in. He turns around and starts traveling on dirt back road, but then while driving down the grandmother

remembers something that startles the cat, it jumps out on Bailey, the kids mother falls out the car door with the baby in arm, the children were thrown to floor of the backseat, a and the grandmother was hurled underneath the dashboard. The car flips over and lands in a ditch, the grandmother is hoping she is hurt to avoid telling them its the wrong state, the mother is sitting in a ditch with a broken shoulder, Bailey just got the cat off of him, and the kids are running around screaming, Weve had an ACCIDENT! (7) Waiting in hopes that someone will come along, a hearse-like car drive up with three men all carrying guns. They appear to be about to help them, but in reality it is the Misfit, the convict that the grandmother has been talking about. He starts killing them according to gender, first, Bailey and John Wesley, then the mother, the baby, and finally June Star, leaving the grandmother last to see the recourse of her actions as she has a conversation with her killer.
