Paulina Hernandez Larumbe English 1102 Elizabeth Hinnant EIP PROPOSAL Diversity at Community Colleges

While some students attend four-year universities after graduating high school, many also attend community colleges. Because of the multitude of reasons people could choose to go to community college, it creates a very large amount of diversity. Many times, four-year universities dont have as much diversity as community colleges do. As a student attending a university, I think its important to be aware of the largely different environment of community colleges. Diversity could be a number of different elements, such as age, ethnicity, and gender. In my ethnography, I hope to study the way these different elements affect the environment of community colleges and the way these students interact with one another in different areas of the school environment. One of the questions I hope to answer in my research is if the vast amount of diversity causes students to interact more or less? Im interested in the different areas they could possibly interact in, such as inside the classroom environment and outside the classroom. Along with this Id like to know if diversity has a positive impact in classroom interactions. Through my research Id like to shed light on why students either interact with each other more or less, because of diversity. If there is little interaction, what is the reason behind it? If theres a lot of interaction, is it positive or negative? Also, what do either of these add to the classroom dynamic as a whole?
