REACH FOR THE SKY

(Investigation 1) 25/02/14
Aim The aim of this investigation was scientifically determine whether a persons horizontal arm span is an accurate indication of their vertical height. Materials Our materials included: 1X one metre ruler 1X dressmakers tape 1X wall 7X group members

Method 1. Separate into groups of three and give one team the dressmakers tape and one team the metre ruler 2. We would then stand our classmate against the wall 3. Take the measurement we needed with the measuring device we had received 4. Place our findings in our table 5. We then, staying in the same groups, swapped measuring devices and repeated step 2 and 3. 6. After we double checked our answers we averaged it out and received our average height and arm span Results Our results showed that your arm span is an accurate prediction of your vertical height. However my research shows that there is actually no scientifically proven theory behind this statement. But what my research did show me is that this theory has been tested many times and only failed (approx) 5% of the time. Discussion After we proceeded through our method we sat down and considered some points of which our test could have been made fairer and therefore more accurate. Here are those points: Our hair, it would have impacted our results for most people have a different kind of hair style. For example if you had spikey or wiry hair it would of brought your results up. Our shoes, we later discovered that other groups had taken their shoes off, this would have resulted in more accurate readings for some people have inner soles and others wear thin base shoes.
