Burke The Tale of Despereaux To me what helps makes this book a fantasy is the mouse himself, Despereaux. The authors gave this mouse characteristic of a human, but also still having him play a role of a mouse. Despereaux can read, talk to humans, enjoys listening to music, and even falls in love. Despereaux also believes in happy ever after endings as every fantasy does, allowing the reader to get a feel for fantasy in a different version. What also makes this book a fantasy is the friend that Desperaux and Gregory established. Their friendship allows the reader to see that you can make friends with people who are not like you and can make a difference in their life with the simplest things; such as when Desperaux told Gregory stories to shine light on his dark life.
