Team Progress Memo #3

To: Paris Von Lockette From: Justin Hawk, Erhamah Alsuwaidi, Michael Ibarguen, Subject: Faucet-Powered Generator Design Project Progress Memo # 3 Date: 4/14/14 Problem Description We are to design and develop a consumer product that can attach to a home faucet or shower head and produce electrical power, while the water is used for other purposes. We are to create a demonstration prototype by following a project management plan and ensuring that our product can be mass produced in a cost effective manner. Furthermore, we are to design and analyze an accessory or added option for this product that will make creative use of the electrical power produced. Summary of Current Status Our team is currently developing a beta prototype. Once ordered materials arrive, components will be made via laser cutting as the 3D printer will be unavailable for future parts. After completing and testing our alpha prototype, we have a very good understanding on what we need to improve upon in order to successfully create an efficient, finalized design. Work Performed during this Reporting Period During this reporting period, an alpha prototype was created. This prototype was made with materials similar to those decided upon for the final design. This model included: a laser cut turbine blade, PVC housing, acrylic siding, brass shaft, generator, 3/8 inlet and outlet opening, and a PVC generator cover. In analyzing this prototype, we have identified the areas that may cause us problems with our final design. In doing so, we were able to begin selecting concept ideas on how to avoid these problems or minimize their effects. Examples of these issues include sealing off the generator from the water chamber and making sure the shaft is connecting to the generator in an orientation that allows for solely axial rotation. Also, during this period, we completed our project proposal. Furthermore, we performed an economic analysis, projecting the cash inflows and outflows that we expect our product to produce.

Work to be Performed A beta prototype of our faucet powered water generator is to be completed by April 22, 2014. Materials to make this prototype have been ordered through McMasterCarr and are expected to

arrive by April 15, 2014. The following components of our product need to be made separately before assembly: (1) 1 acrylic housing with threaded holes for screws, laser cutter and taps (2) 3/8 drilled and tapped holes for inlet / outlet of water flow using a mill and taps (2) 0.25 acrylic siding with holes for screws and ball bearings , laser cut (1) 3/16 shaft with a hole at center axis where the generators shaft will be press fit into (1) Turbine blade, laser cut (3) 1/4 separate pieces glued together to create bucket shapes, laser cut (1) Generator housing to fit the generator stabilizing and protecting it

Once each of these parts has been manufactured, we can assemble them to create our beta prototype.

Budget Report: We currently have spent $55.98 out of the $100 that we have available to use for this project. Listed below are the materials ordered thus far. The parts are to be delivered on 4/15/14. With a substantial amount still remaining in our budget, we will be able to order any replacement parts in the event of errors or changes in our design going forward.
