Personal Work Plan for Cultural Competence

Self assessment of being cultural competence: In the beginning of this course. I was somewhat knowledgeable about the different cultures that we have been discussing in this class. I did not know all the facts about each group or each ethnic group. I was not aware of the demographic statistics on every group. Therefore, that information was helpful to me. I am aware of the stereotypical perceptions of some of the groups. I know that Middle Easterners are perceived by racist people as dangerous, suicidal and deeply religious Muslims post 911. This is such a negative view point. The truth is Islamic groups are not all like that. Another cultural group that has been oppressed over the centuries are women who have good stereo typical preconceived views and bad ones. The negative views are that women are bad bosses and are overly emotional. The truth is of course all women are neither bad bosses or overly emotional. According to some feminist thinkers Appleby, G., Colon, E., Hamilton, J., (2011 2007 2001). Young and Dickerson argue that sexism cannot be delineated from the effects of racism, classism. Sexism and Racism are intertwined in at least three methods of social control that is exercised by the dominant culture to keep women and African Americans in their place. Physical intimidation and threats of violence against both groups. Domination of the economic status of both groups. The aspirations are limited for both groups. In my own experience as an African American woman. Institutional racism is what I notice and feel has an impact on my reality. I feel I have to work harder than others to even be noticed. The same is basically true for other minorities. In the Latino population recent reports show that thrity percent of Puerto Ricans families live below the poverty level and have lower educational attainment. They also have a median number of school years completed and experience high unemployment. The

women are the head of their households. Appleby, G., Colon, E., Hamilton, J., (2011, 2007, 2001). 2. What have you learned in this course: I learned how the PIE assessment works and it is a good tool for social works to assess the client problems and strengths. It helps the social worker identify how they can use intervention to help client. Factor 1 and Factor 11 are used together. I am now aware of how oppression is all about power; the power to enforce a certain world view. The power to deny equal access to housing, employment opportunities and health care. Appleby, G., Colon, E., Hamilton, J., (2011, 2007, 2001). I was already aware that racism still exist and that some social welfare policies were in place to help minorities like affirmative action and educational grants. Thus, other social programs like WIC women infant and children. What challenged my preconceived perceptions were the strengths of the mentally challenged. They have strengths that help them to achieve goals every day. The question that aroused my mind was Can mentally challenge people ever improve and get back to normal lives. Can a clinical social worker or therapist see change in their clients? I would like to expire more information about this population. 3. What does this mean for your practice: I might be interested in several different populations .I like the youth so working in a school setting could be challenging. I would like to serve them. I would like to work with adults to help them with family issues. Families need support and help to be successful. I think about individuals with problems like bipolarize and other biological social issues. I need more time to decide. I want to know more about the mental health population and how to effectively help them .The culture that I would like to help is the First Nation People.

There is really no population that I would not want to work with except for maybe the disable population. I need more knowledge and courage to effectively help them. I might be too emotional to see that person not able to use their physical body. Its something for me to work on. What more do you need to know: I want to know more about the First Nation People and how they live today. I want to know more about what is being done to help them. I want to know what programs and policies are directly impacting their everyday life. Action steps: 1. I want to volunteer in their community. 2. I need to do more research on this group the First Nation People. 3. I need to research organizations and groups that already exist.
