Sir Ridley Scott

He was born on the 30th November 1937. His father was absent most of
his life as he was in the army. His older brother joined the Navy and they
had very little contact. His family moved around a lot, from Germany to
Wales. But after the second world war, his family went back to settle in
Teesside. He enjoyed watching films which lead to him continuing his
career in his interests later in life. He got a Diploma in Design at West
Hartlepool college of Art. He progressed to an M.A in graphic design.

He contributed a lot to the college magazine and helped to make its film
section. He made a short movie called ‘Boy and Bicycle’ which had his
brother and his father in it. After he graduated, he got a job as a set
designer with the BBC.

Scott was a big fan a Stanley Kubrick at the early stages of his
development as a director. He then re made the film ‘Paths of Glory’ as a
short film. He was asked to design the set or ‘Doctor Who’ the second
series. But before he could do so, he was placed on a director training
programme.

5 members of the Scott family are directors. His 3 children are commercial
directors. While his brother is a successful film director and has worked
with his brother to produce films. All of which are part of his association,
the Ridley Scott Associations.
