Reflection In our Communications 1010 class we were asked to do an interview project.

In this project we were to conduct an interview with a professional in a field of study of our choice. This project was to help us apply the strategies we had learned about how to conduct an information-seeking interview, help us to learn about a career that we were interested in, help us to analyze how we conduct interviews and how to use memo formatting and be able to write a formal letter of thanks. The person I chose to interview was a registered nurse at Primary Childrens Hospital. I am interested in pediatrics and wanted to learn more about the day to day tasks of working with children and their families. The nurse that I interviewed helped me to understand that you are not just working with a child, you are working with their family as well. A pediatric nurse has to be patient, understanding, loving and be able to be compassionate. No matter what the age of the child involved, there are parents and family members that are going through that illness or surgery along with that child. You as the nurse have to be able to have communication skills and listening skills that will help to set that families mind at ease. You are usually the first and last person that family will speak with, so it is very important that you that you are willing to answer all their questions and be understanding as they go through this difficult time. By being able to participate in this assignment it has helped me to understand that being a nurse is more than just delivering medications. It takes compassion for your patients, understanding of their situation and being able to be a person that will take the time to listen to their concerns.
