The Distance Between Us by Reyna Grande is an inspirational story of a Mexican immigrant girl who faces many odds on her way to el otro lado, the other side. The story tells us what life is like for a small girl in Iguala, Mexico along with her mother, brother and sister when their father comes to the United States in search for better job opportunities to fulfill his dream of building his own house. This is one of the many stories that the immigrant people have to share about their journey to what is considered the place of opportunities. Reyna Grande is one of the few that has had the opportunity and the skills to share with the world what her life was like. I think this story was shared very well in the voice of Grande because it was her own story, a story that only she could tell with detail and feeling. It was her truth. One of the things that makes this story so powerful is that many people can relate to it being that so many of us are either immigrants ourselves or have family members who are. Those people who cannot relate in that aspect can learn from stories such as this one of the struggles that many immigrants have to face to come to America. I hope that more people who have similar stories will share their side of the story and let us see through their eyes what life was like for them.
