$, Yasmin am going to school to e%entually become a Geologist&
My plan is to attend 'alt (ake )ommunity )ollege until $ *inish my
generals& +nce $,m done -ith that $ plan on *urthering my education up
at the .ni%ersity +* .tah and getting into their Geology program they
ha%e so $ can recei%e my masters degree& /he reason $ chose to become a
Geologist is because $,%e al-ays been *ascinated -ith 0arth and more
importantly nature& 1ny chance $ get to be outside $ !ump on the
opportunity& $,%e al-ays told mysel* $ didn,t -ant a regular !ob -orking
234 in a cubical& /hat,s !ust not *or me5 $ need something that,s e6citing
and something -here $ can learn ne- things e%eryday& Geology o**ers a
bunch o* di**erent opportunities and re7uires a lot o* di**erent demands&
.nlike a regular !ob -here you !ust ha%e one main task, Geology is
di**erent& Your tasks may range *rom obser%ing structures o* rocks,
analyze di**erent types o* chemicals certain things like that& $n order to
be a geologist things like spatial reasoning, critical thinking, numerical
reasoning, clear communication, care*ul obser%ations at a range o*
scales, among others are skills you,d need to bring to the table e%eryday
-hen -orking out in the *ield or in your o**ice&

class back there& 'ince my school -asn,t *ar *rom (ittle cotton-ood at
the end o* semester my class had the chance to go on a *ield trip to (ittle
)otton-ood )anyon& 8e -ent -ith t-o en%ironmental specialists and
e%er since then $ ha%e been interested in becoming one& 8hat most
people don,t kno- is that en%ironmental specialists belie%e the key to
reducing casualties is to use our e6isting kno-ledge earth7uakes and
*inding -ays to implement measures that -ill increase a-areness,
preparedness, and resilience& /he real *ocus needs to be on dealing -ith
the social, political and economic barriers that pre%ent more sa%ed li%es
a*ter a natural disasters& 8e need more 0n%ironmental specialist
because they de%elops and maintain management in*ormation systems
that identi*y the location o* hazardous materials in all *acilities& /hey
also update and deli%er employee training programs related to hazardous
materials and -aste& 0n%ironmental specialist super%ise -ork o* outside
contractors in%ol%ed in remo%ing or testing hazardous materials&
1nd -ith that being said, -hether you,re a Geologist or an
0n%ironmental 'pecialist the 0arth is still an important *actor in us being
able to do our !obs& 0arth, the people, the organisms, and plants are all
%ery crucial and -e must do e%erything -e can to help protect them& /he
0arth7uake that,s supposed to hit .tah 9/he Big +ne: as most re*er to it
as is something that most people aren,t prepared *or& $t,s almost like
-hen you talk about it people !ust brush it o** like it,s not that big o* a
deal -hen in *act it is5 'o let us take it back a bit and start *rom the
beginning&
1n 0arth7uake is shaking o* the ground caused by the sudden
mo%ement o* blocks o* rock along a break in the 0arth,s crust, also
kno-n as a *ault& 1s most o* you kno- .tah, but 'alt (ake )ity in
particular sits on one o* the biggest *ault lines that e6pands *rom Malad

has had a big earth7uake dated all the -ay back to 10,000 years&
/hings that -e take *or granted like bridges, pipelines, road-ays,
and other structures can be damaged and destroyed *rom the earth7uake&
?ot !ust homes like most people think& Pretty much lea%ing us -ith
almost nothing and no -ay out& /his is -hy -e came up -ith a plan that
e%ery person @-hether you li%e alone or ha%e a *amilyA should take
seriously i* the sa*ety o* you and your lo%ed ones is something that is
important to you& 8e belie%e -e ha%e come up -ith some e**icient tips
on -ays to protect you and your lo%ed ones be*ore, during and a*ter the
