+Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 3: OBSERVING, DOCUMENTING, AND ASSESSING TO
SUPPORT YOUNG CHILDREN AND FAMILIES
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that child
observation, documentation, and other forms of assessment are central to the
practice of all early childhood professionals. They know about and understand the
goals, benefits, and uses of assessment. They know about and use systematic
observations, documentation, and other effective assessment strategies in a
responsible way, in partnership with families and other professionals, to positively
influence the development of every child (NAEYC 2010).
Brief Description of Evidence:
During the fall semester, as part of my ECED 235- Preschool Practicum
class, I created a child case study. This project consisted of planned lessons, daily
anecdotal notes, observations, assessments, and pictures of the child engaging in
activities to create a childs portfolio. This portfolio illustrated the childs
developmental learning progress throughout the semester.
Analysis of What I Learned:
Through the completion of this portfolio, I learned different ways to assess
a childs developmental domains of learning. I learned that children grow at
different rates, and as a caregiver, one must find the most suitable technique to and
caregivers are helping to building on what the child has learned at home.
How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:
As an early childhood professional, we need to understand that children
grow and develop differently. A caregiver must keep anecdotal notes, monitor a
childs actions, and perform developmental tests on each child to see what they
know and ways to expand on their knowledge. Since a childs home is their first
teacher, a caregiver must collaborate with the families to help the child grow and
learn effectively.
