Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 5. USING CONTENT KNOWLEDGE TO BUILD
MEANINGFUL CURRICULUM
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs use their knowledge of academic
disciplines to design, implement, and evaluate experiences that promote positive development
and learning for each and every young child. Candidates understand the importance of
developmental domains and academic (or content) disciplines in early childhood curriculum.
They know the essential concepts, inquiry tools, and structure of content areas, including
academic subjects, and can identify resources to deepen their understanding. Candidates use their
own knowledge and other resources to design, implement, and evaluate meaningful, challenging
curriculum that promotes comprehensive developmental and learning outcomes for every young
child (NAEYC 2010).
Brief Description of Evidence:
During the fall semester, as part of my ECED 243 Cognitive Curriculum class, I created
a multiple intelligence unit framework. The unit framework consisted of finding a topic,
planning several developmentally appropriate activities, forming objectives, and using Indiana
foundations for preschool children that focus on each multiple intelligence.
Analysis of What I Learned
Through the completion of this project I learned how to find activities that support each
level of multiple intelligences. I learned that the different multiple intelligence level helps a
person find out about themselves and the type of learning style a person uses. I learned that using
the Indiana Foundations can help determine ways to understand how children learn and what to
look for when assessing the child.
How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:
As an early childhood professional I understand that each child is different and the way
they learn is different. I use my knowledge to plan, create, teach, and assess the activities
according to the experiences of the children in my care. I focus on the major subject areas and
other materials to expand on their learning style. I provide resources to help the children
understand what I am teaching. I use teaching methods or approaches that help promote, expand
on, support and encourage learning.
