Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 6. BECOMING A PROFESSIONAL
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs identify and conduct themselves as
members of the early childhood profession. They know and use ethical guidelines and other
professional standards related to early childhood practice. They are continuous, collaborative
learners who demonstrate knowledgeable, reflective and critical perspectives on their work,
making informed decisions that integrate knowledge from a variety of sources. They are
informed advocates for sound educational practices and policies (NAEYC, 2010)
Brief Description of Evidence:
During the spring and fall semester I renewed my Child Development Associates (CDA) and
attended several early childhood conferences and trainings. I took an early childhood education
curriculum class at Ivy Tech Community College in order for me to receive credit hours towards
renewing my CDA. I went to several conferences that taught me art, science, and math activities to teach
and implement with the children in my care. I was able to buy scholastic books, calendars, and other
classroom supplies; science and sensory materials; along with other valuable resources to help me build
and expand on my learning.
Analysis of What I Learned:
Through the completion of my Child Development Associates (CDA) and attending other early
childhood conferences I learned new activities, bought new classroom supplies and materials, and met
many early childhood professionals. I learned that I am not the only person who struggles and needs help
finding, planning and creating new challenging activities for young children. I learned that networking
and socializing is a good way to explore new people and resources. I also learned that my CDA is the first
step to starting a job in the education field.
How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:
When becoming an early childhood professional, one must join and become a member of an early
childhood organization. This will allow you to meet other professionals and become part of the team for
helping, encouraging, and supporting children. One must behave in an appropriate and respectful manner
while using and understanding the NAEYC standards and Indiana Foundations. One must continue to
build and expand on their learning by attending various trainings and conferences.
