Lesson Plan
Pendulum Painting
Subject: Science Grade: 4
Objective Students will manipulate paper to complete a painting
that represents the relationship of the string length to
the cycle of six (6) of the same amplitude.

TAKS # 4.5.A.B
TEKS

Predict and draw conclusions about what happens
when part of a nonliving system is changed or removed
such as a pendulum.

Materials/Technology

Six (6) CPO pendulum (one at each table), each with a
different string length, six colors of paint, art paper (12x
18 inches), newspaper for tables, old shirts, paint
brushes, disposable containers (for paint), water, paper
towels, trash bags.

Procedure

1. The teacher will set up six different pendulum
systems (different string lengths).
2. The teacher will set up one container of paint at
each table.
3. The teacher will review with the class how the
pendulum works (i.e. cycles, periods, amplitude)
4. The student will observe the relationship
between the string length, and period.
5. Teacher will demonstrate on the board the
procedure for watching the pendulum and
matching the paint stroke to the cycle of the
pendulum.
6. The student will use pendulums with six different
length of string, the students will create their own
individual painting representing the cycle of each
pendulum system.
7. Students review rubric on expectations of final
product.

Vocabulary

Pendulum, period, amplitude, pendulum hanger, cycle,
pendulum bob, angle scale, knob, peg hanger, cord
stop.

Evaluation

Resources

Representations of various abstract paintings.

Teacher Notes

On the before the project students are given paints,
students should have the systems set up and have a
time of exploration.
Optional is to look at example of various abstract art
forms such as pointillism etc.
