Reflective Essay: Class Division among African Americans

I enjoyed watching the movie about class division amongst African Americans. It was very eye
opening to see that back in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s the Africans were all united both in class
and in objectives. They all had the same objective, and that was to get the civil rights that they
were denied so many years. In the beginning they were united but once the elite group that
lead the rallies furthered their education and social class still trying to fight for a better class for
all African Americans. This created a lot of problems within the African American community.
As I mentioned above the ones that furthered their education also furthered their social
class and this divided the African American community more and more over the years. The ones
that moved up into prestigious social class even admitted to being white-washed. This was
very interesting to me that they even recognized that they changed to fit in among their
wealthier Americans which do mostly consist of Caucasian males. The ones that didnt move up
into prestigious classes took on the role that society told them to almost. Society told them that
they were gangsters, trouble makers, suppressed Americans when that is not the case. I do
believe however that African Americas as a whole have been oppressed for too long and
something does need to change that helps others other than Caucasians to move up in
America.
