Monday, 3/31:
o 1) DO NOW: What causes Katniss to hate the Captiol?
Ex: She might hate the Capitol because are wealthy at the expense of the
poorer districts
o 2) Katniss hates the Capitol tree map/bubble map
Create this as a class, include class discussion
Possible reasons she hates the Capitol:
They force the districts to fight each other
They are responsible for the deaths of young people
o Ex: death of Rue
They have so much money when other districts have nearly
nothing
They control the food supplies and the jobs of people in the
districts
o 3) Create Found Poem
Teacher explains that students will create a found poem to help them
practice adopting Katnisss perspective
Teacher models a sample found poem for the novel, explains that she used
words within the text and phrases to create a poem
Students create their own found poems
Begin brainstorming ideas for speech, if time

Tuesday, 4/1:
o 1) Finish Found Poem
Complete found poem that students started in class yesterday
Teacher models student found poem examples
o 2) Begin writing speech
Teacher models an example of the speech (Peetas perspective)
Students start brainstorming, planning and writing speech

Wednesday, 4/2: (short day)
o Students work on writing Katniss speech all period

Thursday, 4/3:
o 1) teacher reviews Katniss prompt/rubric
Students analyze the prompt/rubric, identify necessary components of
speech
o 2) Engaging the Audience:
Students contribute prior knowledge to analyze the openings of persuasive
speeches
Students create their own possible opening hooks for their Katniss
persuasive speech
o 3) students evaluate speeches
Students trade papers with a partner, evaluate speech with scoring rubric
Students give one positive comment of something they liked in the speech
and one comment that offers a suggestion for student improvement

Friday, 4/4: (short day)
o Students write, edit, revise speech
o FINAL DUE DATE for SPEECh
