Born in East Meadow, New York on

March 20, 1954
Moved to Tustin, California in 1963
Became an avid reader in high
school, and J.D.Salinger and Kurt
Vonnegut inspired him
Attended Antioch College in Ohio and
University of California at Berkeley
Taught at Hillside Elementary School
First story, Sideways Stories from
Wayside School, was written in 1976,
based on Hillside Elementary School

Took a year and a
half to finish
Thought it was
sort of like a
cartoon
Hardest part was
tying the story
together at the
end
Got the idea from
returning to
Texas after being
in Maine
