3. A Holiday Trip to Remember

I spend a family vacation on a tropical island ended up with this wonderful holiday trip to
Tioman, a popular Malaysian island resort which shot to fame as the island of Bali Hai in the
Rodgers Hammerstein of South acific!
"irst day thar we started our #ourney, we $oarded the high%speed ferry from &luang ferry
terminal in Malaysia for the ' hour #ourney to Tioman! I was so e(cited to $e on my first $oat
ride $ut the e(citement soon wore off once I was in the open sea with nothing much to see e(cept
the monotonous scenery of mainland Malaysia in the ha)y distance! *ut in the open water, the
s+y was $lue and cloudless $ut in the distance, cloud hovered a$ove Tioman! ,s we neared the
island, visions of the legendary Bali Hai from the movie South acific fleeted through my
mind! Before long, the huge island of Tioman loomed $efore us, rising out of the water
ma#estically with its pea+s towering over us and surrounded $y an emerald sea!
-e arrived at the #etty in front of Ber#aya Tioman and had to clear immigration officials
who had set up des+s at the front and rear of the $oat! ,fter a long wait, we finally clear
immigration and $oarded another $oat which $rought us to the #ety at &ampung aya, where we
got down and wal+ed to Tioman aya Resort, which would $e our home for the ne(t . nights!
-e had $oo+ed a / days ' nights full%$oard pac+age with two additional nights 0free and easy1!
-e visited the Tioman Marine ar+! ,s it was a half day trip, the resort provided pac+ed
lunches! My first e(perience seeing the fishs close%up was e(citing! I had ama)ed that the fishes
didnt have a natural fear of humans, unli+e most terrestrial animal! They would hang around
snor+els waiting for handouts and were even willing to $e hand fed $y visitors! *ther fish
species that werent interested in $read simply swam around or were $usy feeding on algae off
roc+s and corals!
The Tioman paya resort that we stayed was 2uite nice with its tim$er chalets $lending
into the surrounding! The air%conditioned rooms were clean and comforta$le with solar heaters
mounted on the roofs for hot water! *ur particular chalet was located ne(t to the forest! To get to
the $each or main dining hall, we had to cross a little wooden $ridge $uilt over a river with
mangrove trees fringing its $an+s! Monitor li)ards would occasionally ma+e their presence felt
when they splashed into the water! There were many of them here and some were 2uite $ig! 3ach
morning they would lie on the grass on the resort grounds, $as+ing in the morning sunshine and
running up the nearest tree when we approached too close! Meals were served in the common
dining area, which also housed the other shared facilities, li+e T4, newspapers and other reading
material! ,n ala%carte menu was also availa$le!
,fter . nights in Tioman, we reluctantly $oarded our $oat at aya #etty which transferred
us to the main #etty at Ber#aya where we caught the high%speed ferry $ac+ to &luang! My first
holiday island trip had $een a lot more en#oya$le than e(pected, and I now loo+ed forward to my
ne(t island destination that is ulau Redang!
