The designed world is the product of a design process, which provides ways to turn resources -
materials, tools and machines, people, information, energy, capital, and time - into products
and services.
2. Information and communication systems greatly impact our quality of life.
a. Information and Communication systems follow the systems model and require
inputs, processes, outputs and feedback.
i. Inputs: a phone, a person operating the phone, cell phone service, etc.
ii. Process: transmitting the message using phone, landlines and/or satellite,
phone
iii. Output: message sent
iv. Feedback: undeliverable message or confirmation of message sent

3. Information and communication systems can be further broken down into the:
a. Source
i. A place, person, or thing from which something comes or can be obtained.
b. Encoder
i. A device, circuit, transducer, software program, algorithm or person that
converts information from one format or code to another, for the purposes of
standardization, speed, secrecy, security or compressions.
c. Transmitter
i. A set of equipment used to generate and transmit electromagnetic waves
carrying messages or signals, especially those of radio or television.
d. Receiver
i. A piece of radio or television apparatus that detects broadcast signals and
converts them into visible or audible form.
e. Decoder
i. An electronic device for analyzing the information components of an audio or
visual signal and feeding them to separate amplifier channels.
f. Storage
i. The retention of retrievable data on a computer or other electronic system;
memory.
g. Retrieval
i. The obtaining or consulting of material stored in a computer system.
h. Destination
i. The place to which someone or something is going or being sent.
