Mayfair paper;
Oil Pastels or pencil crayons.

Introduction

1. Open up the class via Prezi presentation about
what it means to be conceptual.
2. Walk through the basic ideas of symbolic
representation and the use of metaphor in art.
3. Introduce the assignment to students.
4. Specify elements required for assessment.

Closure

1. Students will each receive their pieces of
Mayfair paper to create their own personal
doors.
2. They are expected to first plan the composition
out in pencil, and seek approval. They need to
describe why they have chosen specific symbols
and elements.

3. Students will design an elaborate front door,
with the side walls and railings/door knob
carefully rendered.

4. They will then cut open the door on three sides
to open a flap and reveal another piece of
Mayfair behind it. This is where the symbolism
and metaphor about who they are will be
revealed via oil pastel or pencil crayon,
depending on student desire.

5. Allow 10- 15 minutes clean up time.







Assessment of
Students Learning:


Assessment of student learning will be through a checklist of the s
following:
1. Overall creativity and craftsmanship;
2. Use of symbolic expressiveness in the elements and principles;
3. Demonstration of use of space and arrangement of composition,
including door and behind the door;
4. Use of space- filling of the page.

Learners with a language barrier can model peers and understand
expectations through a process of sketchbook ideas and collaboration.
