How phonology is used in the creation of the linguistic other. Special focus on intonation and stress.

Hypothesis: When recounting events of dispute or conflict, speakers make use of various phonological
features to create another or the person that they came into conflict with.

The key difference between intonation and tone is that while tone creates lexical meaning, intonation
creates discursive meaning. An extension of this understanding would be that intonation has a wider
scope for uses in creating contexts and orientating discourse.
Various kinds of discourse exist, depending on a given context or situation. It is through the use of
various discourse markers, such as intonation or word choice, that we are able to identify different form
of discourse. In Trinidadian speakers, it has been noted that when recounting conflicts the narrative is
marked by intonational variation to create a linguistic other, that is a linguistic representation of the
antagonist or opposing force. This intonational variation is influenced by
