HISTORY
Mahindra and an independent India began their rise together. In 1945, two enterprising brothers
named J.C. Mahindra and K.C. Mahindra joined forces with Ghulam Mohammed and started Mahindra &
Mohammed as a steel company in Mumbai. Two years later, India won its independence, Ghulam
Mohammed left the company to become Pakistans first finance minister, and the Mahindra brothers
ignited the company's enduring growth with their decision to manufacture Willys jeeps under license in
Mumbai. The companys new name - Mahindra & Mahindra, of course.
The Mahindra brothers believed that new modes of transportation could be a key to Indias prosperity,
so one of their first goals was to build rugged, simple vehicles capable of tackling the Indian terrain.
Early pioneers of globalization, the brothers collaborated with a wide range of international companies
and before long, Mahindras reach extended to steel, tractors, telecom, and more.
Now, after more than six decades, Mahindra has grown from a humble local outfit to a US $16.2 billion
corporation employing more than 155,000 people around the world. Its been quite an adventure so
far, and were proud of our global leadership in utility vehicles, tractors, and information technology, as
well as our significant presence in financial services, leisure and hospitality, engineering, trade, and
logistics. As we accelerate into the 21st century, well continue to pursue innovative ideas that enable
people to rise. Weve come a long way, but the journey has just begun.

CSR AT THE MAHINDRA AND MAHINDRA GROUP

EDUCATION
Mahindra believe education is the single most powerful intervention for transforming lives. Knowledge
and skills impact not only earnings, but self-esteem; not only the standard of living, but how the life is
lived. By bringing quality education to more people, we help build a more tolerant, healthy, just, and
connected society.

NANHI KALI - Educating the girl child for a brighter tomorrow
Anand Mahindra founded Nanhi Kali in 1996 out of the conviction that empowering women through
education would have a tremendous positive impact on the nation in the long run. Girls education
correlates with a reduction in child and maternal mortality, improvements in child nutrition and health,
lower fertility rates, better economic production, and female empowerment. Through Nanhi Kali,
Mahindra hopes to play a small but significant role in shaping Indias future by empowering girls through
education.

MAHINDRA UNITED WORLD COLLEGE
At Mahindra United World College, we teach our students critical thinking so that they can engage with
the worlds diversity thoughtfully and positively. We bring together students from more than 75
countries to study foreign languages, sciences, performing and visual arts, mathematics, and sociology.
The focus on academics is rigorous and challenging, but the focus on exchange across race, religion,
ethnicity, class, caste, gender and nationality is just as important.
PRIDE SCHOOLS - Empowerment through livelihood training.
The Mahindra Pride School helps transform the lives of youth from socially and economically
disadvantaged communities by providing livelihood training. We give young people from scheduled
castes and scheduled tribes access to skills that empower them to earn a livelihood for themselves and
for their families.
GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS
We understand that young people have dreams, big dreams, and we want to help them achieve them.
Beginning in the 1950s, the K.C. Mahindra Education Trust has set up scholarships and grants for socially
and economically underprivileged students. Our range of scholarships and grants make education
attainable for determined students across India.

ESOPS IN EDUCATION- We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.
Our Employee Social Options (Esops) program supports employees in creating volunteering projects
based on the needs of underprivileged communities in and around their place of work. Employees
generate ideas for projects, prepare annual activity plans, implement each activity, and monitor results.
To fund these employee initiatives, each sector targets to donate 0.5 percent of its profit after tax to the
central CSR fund and 0.5 percent to Esops.

ENVIRONMENT
All our business initiatives incorporate environmental responsibility, from our zero water waste
automobile factory at Chakan to our LEED-certified Mahindra Lifespaces residences. Quality of life and
environmental health are two sides of the same coin.

ESOPS IN ENVIRONMENT- We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.

GREEN FACILITIES-Laying the foundation for a greener tomorrow.

As part of our long-term sustainability plan, all our facilities are following comprehensive plans to reduce
waste, conserve resources, and minimize emissions. At Mahindra, we believe our responsibility to our
stakeholders extends beyond providing satisfying products and services to the integrity of our
production processes. In 2009, our Farm Equipment plant in Nagpur won the Confederation of Indian
Industries (CII) National Award for Excellence in Water Management and our Automotive plant in Nasik
received second prize in the state-level award for Excellence in Energy Management. All our
Automotive, Farm Equipment, and Components plants are either already ISO 14001:2004 certified or in
the process of obtaining certification.
SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTS
We are committed to making a positive impact across the entire product life cycle, from manufacturing
to disposal. During the production process, we strive to create local jobs and minimize environmental
impact by conserving raw materials and energy, eliminating toxic raw materials, and reducing the
quantity and toxicity of all emissions and wastes. Our products support entrepreneurship and
prosperity while minimizing negative environmental impact, and our services incorporate socioeconomic
development and green goals.

HEALTH
Good health is the foundation on which we build happy, prosperous, and meaningful lives. Our efforts
enable people to live healthier through education and medical services. We organize workshops on
HIV/AIDS, dental care, and hygiene and run medical camps providing free care. Our disaster relief
response to the 2008 Bihar floods touched 10,000 lives. And our Lifeline Express, Call 108, and 104
Advice services are expanding medical care into more and more regions that are not well served by the
formal system. By bringing knowledge and treatment to new regions, we are laying the foundation for
millions of people to lead stronger, more prosperous lives.

LIFELINE EXPRESS
The Impact India Lifeline Express arose from a simple yet powerful thoughtif people cant come to the
hospital, then the hospital should come to them. The Impact India Foundation created the Lifeline
Express to be the worlds first hospital on wheels, bringing medical facilities to remote areas and
treating people whose disabilities prevent them from making the journey to a formal hospital. Since
2007, we have supported the Lifeline Express every year with financial contributions and volunteering
through our Employee Social Options Program (Esops).
EMRI
In 2005, Mahindra Satyam partnered with the Emergency Management and Research Institute to
provide comprehensive emergency response services through a toll-free number108. We provide all
technical support, putting our cutting edge communications technology to work to deliver the quickest
response possible to any distress call, be it a medical, police, or fire related emergency.
HMRI-Delivering medical services through technological innovation.
The 104 Advice helpline brings quality medical consultation to anyone with a phone across the state of
Andhra Pradesh. As the number of Indians with cell phones booms, call-in health counseling is bringing
scientific care to rural and undeveloped areas for the first time. Set up in 2007, the 104 Advice medical
helpline run by the Health Management and Research Institute (HMRI) has already grown from 200 calls
per day to an average of 50,000. Mahindra Satyam is proud to provide the technical support for the
worlds largest health contact centre.
ESOPS IN HEALTH - We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.
Our Employee Social Options (Esops) program supports employees in creating volunteering projects

CULTURE
India is world-famous for its rich cultural history. We help support our long heritage of performing and

2011, we brought India into the world motorcycle racing circuit by entering our own Mahindra Racing

At Mahindra, we believe that real change comes about when people give not just their money, but their
