Lesson Preparation Worksheet

(Thinking about the lesson)

Teacher Candidate: Hillary Enyert
Title of Lesson: STAR: Anti-bullying strategy
Grade Level: Third Grade
Subject Area: Social

Lesson Topic (What is the big idea?):
Students will learn the strategy STAR to learn what to do if they are being bullied at school.

What standard(s) and/or IEP goal(s) will it address?
Content Area: Comprehensive Health
Grade level: Third
Standard 3: Emotional and Social Wellness
1. Utilize knowledge and skills to treat self and others with care and respect.

Main Objective of Instruction (What do you want the student(s) to learn?):
Students will learn STAR (Stop, Think, And then, React) to understand what to do when being bullied.

Supporting Objectives:
1. Students will memorize what the four steps of STAR stand for.
2. Students will understand how to apply all four steps of STAR.

Specific Strategies to be taught/modeled:
1. Students will learn the mnemonic phrase STAR
2. Students will be put in different fictional situations to understand how to apply STAR

Planning for individual differences (mediated scaffolding): What are the accommodations/modifications you
need to prepare?
Students will be provided a visual and create their own visual for the STAR strategy. Teacher will model
different fictional situations with another teacher or para to show her what is considered bullying and how to
apply the strategy through self-talk. The teacher will discuss different types of bullying and give students
different situations to ask if the fictional person is being bullied.

What background knowledge do the students have? How will you assess students learning pre, during and
post?
Students are in a social group at school that occasionally discusses different aspects of bullying, as well as
PAWS time, which is a school run program once a month for students to focus on bullying and what do if being
bullied.
Pre: Students will be given a few questions involving different scenarios of bullying and multiple-choice
options on how to react.
During: Teacher observation will be made to determine if students are understanding the lesson and abstract
idea of STAR.
Post: Teacher will pretend to be a bully to another teacher or para and the students will be expected to describe
and explain to the victim what to do.

What management/grouping issues do you need to consider?
Students will be taught in a small group setting in ILC class.

Materials and Resources:
STAR posters
Markers

How/where will students be able to integrate (generalize) this learning?
The students will be able to apply this learning throughout her day. The different scenarios the teacher or para
will come up with to demonstrate what bullying looks like will have them in different areas throughout the
school. For example, one will be done in a classroom, another on the playground, and another walking through
the halls.

How will you evaluate student learning from this lesson and build review into ongoing instruction (judicious
review)?
Students will create their own STAR poster and be asked to describe all four steps. The STAR strategy will be
discussed with the students on occasion after the lesson is taught to make sure they remember the strategy and
how to use it.

Lesson Plan
(What will actually be done)

Lesson Title: STAR: Anti-bullying strategy

Main Objective of this lesson: Students will learn STAR (Stop, Think, And then, React) to understand
what to do when being bullied.

Anticipatory Set How will you get the student(s) attention?) Relate lesson to prior learning.
Teacher and para will act out a fictional scenario of being bullied. One person will be the bully while the other
is the victim. After skit is performed, the teacher will ask the students what just happened? After getting
answers, teacher will introduce STAR, telling each student that they can be a star if they remember STAR!

Teaching: (Is this an informal presentation, direct instruction, or structured discovery?) What strategies will
you be using? Be sure to include differentiation.
Informal presentation.
Teacher will be teaching the STAR strategy (Stop, Think, And then, React) to help students learn how to handle
a situation if they are being bullied. Before teaching the strategy, the teacher and students will discuss different
forms of bullying and discover different examples (i.e. social, physical, etc).
After this discussion, another skit will be performed by the teacher and para. The victim will remember the
STAR strategy and self-talk through the situation. By doing this, students will be able to see how to apply the
strategy and what ever step means.

Check for Understanding- What questions will you ask your students?
The students will be asked to individually what the strategy is, what it means, and when to use it.

Guided Practice or Discovery:
The teacher and para will perform another skit, but instead of the victim self-talking through it, each student
individually will be asked to help the victim through the situation. Each student will need to approach the
victim, tell them the strategy, and what it means. After that, the victim and student will brainstorm different
ideas of what the victim should do. Once they have decided, the victim will act out the solution.

Closure: Student(s) summarize, demonstrate learning of lesson.
After each student has helped the victim in different scenarios, the teacher will lead a group discussion on the
strategy. They will summarize what they have learned, the strategy, and what it means.

I ndependent Practice: What will this look like? Is it homework? Completion of a product independently?
Each student will be given a sheet of plain paper and markers to design their own STAR poster. They will be
doing this independently, but stay seated in a group setting. If necessary, students will be able to talk with each
other and ask questions.
