As a whole group meet in the big room to introduce to unit.
Have the kids in pairs to work on the KWL chart provided
Read part of Yankee or Rebel National Geographic
Movie/ video clip

10:15-10:45: Recess

10:45-12:00: Unit Time: Math- Elapsed Time
Fourth grade- begin to learn elapsed time
Fifth grade- review and challenge the kids with elapsed time

Introduce vocabulary using pictures on the white board

Break into math groups based on ability and using the
worksheet provided explain and review symmetry

Read some of the comic book to the whole group
Split the groups and have them research a battle
Students will then create their own comic strip explaining their
battle
Show the entire class their comic strip

1:00-3:00: Unit Time- Gettysburg
As a class read the article about Gettysburg to the students.
Assign each pair of students a part of Gettysburg have them
write a few sentences on it and draw a picture to then be put
into a book entitled Summer Seals and the Battle of
Gettysburg

Read and discuss Chapters 5 and 6
Vocabulary: Snapped (p. 40), Musket (p. 44), Trenches (p. 45),
Crouched (p. 45), Whizzed (p. 45)
10:15-10:45: Recess

10:45-12:00: Unit Time: Math- Measurement
Review how many inches in a foot, feet in a yard, and feet in a
mile.
Provide the students with a work sheet where the students
must measure .
If time allows have the students work on converting inches to
feet and feet to miles ( fifth grade)
If time allows have the students

12:00-1:00: Lunch / Directors Time
1:00-3:00: Unit Time: Gettysburg
Split the fifth and fourth grade in half. Have the fourth grade
be the union and the Fifth grade is the confederates. They
must work together to reach every battle on their way to
Gettysburg by following directions and measuring the correct
distances between the battles. During this the teachers will tell
certain students to sit down because they represent a number
of people killed in that battle. Once each side gets to Gettysburg
have the students do the math to see how many people in the
army are left. Whoever reaches Gettysburg first wins. This can
then turn into a game of dodge ball, fifth against fourth.

10:45-12:00: Unit Time: Math- Temperature
Give the students the temperature of different battles and have
them show it on a thermometer and then do the subtraction to
figure out the difference between battle places

1:00-3:00: Unit Time: Generals and Important People
Summer Seals will work in groups of three or four and
research an important person or general in the Civil War

the Union and write a journal entry about what it was like for
them

Dreary (p. 3)- causing sadness or gloom
Enchantress (p. 5)- a woman who practices magic; sorceress
Dim (p. 6)- not bright; obscure from lack of light or emitted light
Chapter 2:
Knapsack (p. 10)- a canvas, nylon, or leather bag for clothes, food, and
other supplies, carried on the back by soldiers, hikers, etc
Weary (p. 13)- physically or mentally exhausted by hard work,
exertion, strain, etc.; fatigued; tired
Scorching (p. 17)- burning; very hot.
Gazed (p. 17)- to look steadily and intently, as with great curiosity,
interest, pleasure, or wonder
Chapter 3:
Field Hospital (p. 19)- is a large mobile medical unit that temporarily
takes care of casualties on-site before they can be safely transported
to more permanent hospital facilities
Mission (p. 20)-
Heaved (p. 20)- to throw, especially to lift and throw with effort, force,
or violence
Volunteer (p. 21)- a person who performs a service willingly and
without pay
Ladle (p. 23)- a long-handled utensil with a cup-shaped bowl for
dipping or conveying liquids.
Clumsily (p. 25)- awkward in movement or action; without skill or
grace
Chapter 4:
Nervously (p. 27)- highly excitable; unnaturally or acutely uneasy or
apprehensive
Slave (p. 32)- a person who is the property of and wholly subject to
another; a bond servant.

Chapter 5:
Snapped (p. 40)- to make a sudden, sharp, distinct sound; crack, as a
whip; crackle.

Chapter 6:
Musket (p. 44)- a heavy, large-caliber smoothbore gun for infantry
soldiers, introduced in the 16th century: the predecessor of the
modern rifle.
Trenches (p. 45)- a long, narrow excavation in the ground, the
earth from which is thrown up in front to serve as a shelter from
enemy fire or attack.
Crouched (p. 45)- to stoop or bend low.
Whizzed (p. 45)- to make a humming, buzzing, or hissing sound, as an
object passing swiftly through the air.
Chapter 7:
Canteen (p. 46)- a small container used especially by soldiers and
hikers for carrying water or other liquids
Ragged (p. 48)- clothed in tattered garments
Shuffled (p. 52)- to walk without lifting the feet or with clumsy steps
and a shambling gait.
Chapter 8:
Dampened (p. 54)- to make damp; moisten
Frantic (p. 57)- desperate or wild with excitement, passion, fear, pain,
etc.; frenzied.
Bravest (p. 59)- possessing or exhibiting courage or courageous
endurance.
Chapter 9:
Horizon (p. 62)- the line or circle that forms the apparent boundary
between earth and sky.
Vanish (p. 63)- to disappear from sight, especially quickly; become
invisible
Misery (p. 63)- great mental or emotional distress; extreme
unhappiness.
Chapter 10:
Puzzled (p. 72)- to be perplexed or confused.
