Forces in Action

Curriculum links Year 4
ACS Substrand: Physical Sciences
Content Description: Forces can be exerted by one object on another through direct contact or from a
distance (ACSSU076)

Declarative Knowledge:
The learner will know and understand:
- That a force must be exerted to make an object move
- That objects are affected by the size and speed of the force
- That gradients and mass contribute to the effect of the force

Procedural Knowledge:
The learner will be able to:
- Influence the effect of the force exerted on an object
- Manipulate variables that contribute to the effect of the force
- Make predictions about the effect of the force

Examples of use
Students can complete the online digital simulation task as an activity at the start of the unit to help
understand how forces effect moving vehicles. This online simulation also has a table where students
can record results from their experimentation throughout the digital simulation. After completion of the
digital simulation and recording of results, students can then sit a simple online multiple choice quiz
relating to forces.

If using the online digital simulation as an introduction into the topic of Forces, students can then
conduct and record results from their own similar experiments.
