Greek Myth Story- Arachne

The gods are the supreme power, and no one can do anything better than
them. Well, this is what the gods want people to think. What would happen if
someone challenged this idea? This thought of challenging the gods is explained
in the myth Arachne the Weaver. Arachne was a young peasant woman from a
small village. She had incredible skill with her loom. The compliments of those
around her swelled her head with pride. She believed so completely in her own
abilities that she was willing to compare them to anyones, even the goddess
Athenas (MEL). Because everyone said that Arachnes work was so good, she
began to think that she was the best weaver ever even better than Athena-
goddess of the loom. When Atena heard about Arachne saying she was better
that Athena, she disguised herself as an old woman and came to Arachnes
village. She talked to Arachne and said that it wasnt nice to mock Athena. She
said that Arachne should ask Athena for forgiveness. Arachne absolutely
refused. She said,I am not afraid of her, she said. If Athena thinks she
weaves better than I do, let her prove it (MEL). This dialogue shows how
inflated her head was. When Athena heard this, she was outraged! She revealed
her true self, and announced there was going to be a weaving contest. Arachnes
weaving showed all the times that the gods had made mistakes. Seeing
Arachnes work made Athena even angrier. Arachne had proven that her skills
were the equal of a goddesss. But her picture was an insult (MEL). After
Athena found out what Arachnes picture was of, she softly touched Arachne on
the forehead, and Arachne suddenly felt ashamed that she had challenged the
gods. She ran off and hung herself. When Athena
saw what Arachne had done, she felt sorry for her. Arachne was a brave
woman to challenge a goddess. Athena went to Arachne and helped her to live
(MEL).
But, Athena didnt want Arachne to forget how foolish she had been.
So, she sprinkled Arachne with a magic potion. Arachne awoke and
began to change (MEL). Athena had changed Arachne into a spider; so she
could weave and be happy. This also shows that even when you make mistakes,
you can always ask for forgiveness. The myth story Arachne the Weaver shows
that you should never challenge the supreme power or authority. It also shows
how no matter what you do, people will forgive you.
