Classroom Environment
(Excerpt Paraphrased from Differentiation & the Future by Kari Sparks)

Our classroom environment is modeled after
the Reggio Emilia approach and is an easily
navigable space with easily identifiable
areas like library, small group, class
meeting, content area corners or shelves ,
with calming colors (earth tones, blue &
green), natural objects like plants, diffused
lighting, and with a space for self-regulating.
We will have rotations for all subjects
inspired by methods of the Daily 5 & Caf
systems.
We are incorporating as much tactile and
real world example and purpose in
instruction and make an emphasis on helping
grow independence in my students.

them in the sharpened
pencil cup.

The Supply Manager will

that warrant them.

our Response to
Intervention groups)
can use the hand

Retrieving a tissue

There is a hand
signal.

Individual bathroom
break

.

We have a hand

Students are
allowed 3 breaks a
day plus they have
time during morning

out and in.

Whole class

Lunch restroom and
hand-washing break.

Students can call
from
the office.
Classroom phone is
used by the
teacher only.

We have a card
system for our class
library as well as
fines like minutes from
recess. The class
librarian will check
out and in books using
our date stamp.

Turning in homework

We put our
homework in our
home/school folder
in the folder pocket
chart after we

packs (located next
to
lunch/attendance
chart)

Turning in classwork
Our classwork goes to
its designated cubby.
For example the
Morning work, Math,
Writing, Science and
Social Studies
cubbies. If we do not
finish it goes in our To
Do folder in the
accordion file for our
tables.

grabber song or
phrases as well
as physical
breaks

Partners/Groups

Groups are chosen
randomly and then
adjusted monthly
based on behavior.
Partners are chosen
using the partner
picker sticks

We will be establishing Community Rules during the first
weeks of school. Once we have agreed upon them they
will be sent home and signed by student and parents!

Examples from previous classes:
-Raise your Hand!
-Be kind.
-Listen to the speaker.
-Quiet hands and feet during circle time.
Etc.

Rewards and consequences will be based off the school-wide
positive behavior support system we will be using the
behavior traffic light and later in the year the
rainbow clip chart. Students will be taught self-
regulating techniques from the Conscious Discipline
method and a calming corner will be available as well
as refocusing sheets to be done in neighboring
teachers room. I have a 3-warning method between
each level. The traffic light method will have all
students starting on green able to go to the highway
for rewards like silly-brations, positive notes home or
other intrinsic rewards. The yellow light will be for
slowing down and rethinking our behavior in the
calming corner or refocus sheets. Red light means
minutes off our recess and finally the Parking Lot will
mean a note or phone call home.

Rewards:

Are primarily intrinsic (not-physical) like extra recess,
PBS tickets towards the Friday drawing by
administration or quarter awards or special privileges
like sitting in the comfy chair during silent reading.

As a class, through the behavior buckets we will be
earning a monthly party! Like Popcorn and lemonade,
Pizza or Popsicles.
