Rapunzel! Rapunzel! Let down your hair! the prince called out. Ive come to rescue you!
Oh, my sweet Prince, Lamented Rapunzel Alas, I cannot. My evil stepmother has cut my hair. It isnt long
enough to reach the bottom of this tower.
Thats just horrible! replied the Prince.
I know. I know. Cried Rapunzel All day I have nothing to do but walk around
this room in circles for 8 hours a day at a rate of approximately 2 miles per hour. I must
circle the room 1760 times by my count.
That sounds so terribly boring my love replied the Prince I thought you would
have more to do in that large, roomy tower. I mean, there must be at least 7259 cubic
feet of space in there by my estimate.
That isnt quite accurate my Prince. I only have access to the roughly cylindrical
tower. Your estimate must include the 10 foot tall cone shaped roof.
Oh what ever will we do? said the Prince How long do you think it will take for
your hair to grow long enough to reach from the top of the roughly cylindrical tower to the
base?
Im not sure. replied Rapunzel My hair is 21/2 feet long now and it grows
roughly 31/2 inches per week. How many days do you think it will take for my hair to reach the ground?
I promise my dear that I will calculate approximately how long it will take for your hair to reach the ground!
declared the Prince. And, furthermore I will justify my answer using mathematical reasoning!
