How Does E-mail Work

E-mail is one of the most commonly used applications. Many Internet users send e-
mails to each other every day, for many different reasons. E-mail is a very commonly used tool
but not a lot of e-mail users understand how it gets from there computer to the person there
sending it to computer.
When sending an e-mail it goes through the internet with hundreds of other e-mail and
gets broken up into little pieces or packets. hese packets allow e-mails to be sent !uicker
through the server and then are reassembled when they get to the person you sent it to
computer.
o sort through the e-mails there are domain name is within the e-mail address. his
identifies were the e-mail is going. Each domain name identifies a uni!ue I" address #internet
protocol$% the I" address is a string of number that identifies your server. When sending an e-
mail the server checks the domain name to see were to send it then it sends the e-mail to the
person you want to send it to.
he e-mail travels to a lot of servers before it hits the right domain. &our username and
password are what allow you to access your mail bo', when an e-mail finds the right server and
e-mail account the e-mail is then stored until the person youre sending it to checks there e-mail
messages. When the person checks for new mail the e-mail server retrieves the e-mail you sent
them and this all happens in a madder of seconds.
Packets are pieces of the e-mail which allow it to pass through the server.
TCP/IP stands for ransmission (ontrol "rotocol) Internet "rotocol. (")I" allows each
computer to talk to another computer% this allows you to send an e-mail.
