Comments:
Description: Tetanus antitoxin (TAT) is a parenteral antitoxin to tetanus. It is used to prevent tetanus.
Tetanus immune globulin is preferred over TAT for the prevention and treatment of tetanus; use TAT only
when globulin is not available. TAT is a solution of refined and concentrated proteins containing antitoxic
antibodies obtained from the blood of horses immunized against tetanus toxoid.
Contraindications/Precautions: Equine protein hypersensitivity.
Drug Interactions: No significant interactions.
Adverse Reactions: None reported.
Dosage:
For postexposure tetanus prophylaxis:
Adults and children: 1,500 units for those weighing 29.5 kg or less and 5,000 units for those weighing more
than 29.5 kg, IM or SC.
Small children: 4 units/kg (some clinicians recommend the adult dosage regardless of size).
For treatment of tetanus:
Adults: 50,000100,000 units given partly IV and the remainder IM as a single dose.
